Celebrate Rare Disease Day

Saturday, February 28, 2009

Believe me, I know it sounds odd. Seriously, the Rare Disease people need to get a PR person to spin this in a better way. That said, I was recently contacted by the California Department of Public Health Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program announcing February 28 as Rare Disease Day.

As most of you know, Hadley was one of 72 infants per year in this country to contract infant botulism at the age of 4 months. Without the work of these people, we could potentially have been in the hospital for over a month. But with their funding and their fairly newish drug Baby Big, our baby girl has grown up to be a strong and smart as crap toddler. Oh, and did I mention cute too?

From the Rare Disease Website:
On this day, millions of people around the world will observe Rare Disease Day. NORD is the U.S. coordinator, working in partnership with EURORDIS in Europe and other organizations around the world. More than 200 organizations, societies, and companies have signed on to support this effort as Rare Disease Day Partners. We applaud and appreciate what they are doing to focus attention on rare diseases as a public health issue.

Ring Around the Rosie

Friday, February 27, 2009

For Christmas, my brother sent a cd of kids music with 44 songs. To say it has changed our life, would be an understatement. This CD has created the closest thing we have found to Peace On Earth. It took screaming car rides and turned them into smooth, serene, calmness. God forbid if NPR plays for more than 3 minutes into the car ride, a little someone starts making demands from the back seat that sound a little something like "turn on my music, TURN on my Music, TURN ON MY MUSIC MOM!!! Hence, this CD does not leave our car.

Of the 44 songs, several have struck a chord with Hadley including Ring Around the Rosie, which she requests by saying "Ashes". Though the way she says ashes sounds like a young girl with a mouth full of metal and headgear. She loves to spin around to the song and this video is hot off the press. I swear I wasn't being a stage mom in the background demanding another take. She was on a roll and wouldn't stop spinning.

Ladies Night

Monday, February 23, 2009

In 1995, I moved to Colorado without a job. Oh to be young and carefree again, when all of my earthly possessions could fit in the back of my Grand Am. For seven months I worked part-time at night in an art gallery while during the day I temped hoping to find my dream job. Finally in April of 1996, after answering phones for a week with the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, I was offered full-time work as an admin assistant with a real salary. This is the best possible thing that could ever have happened to me because 1) I could pay rent and buy drinks every week-end while perusing locals looking for marriage material; 2) Stability made me sane; and 3) I met the best friends that a girl could hope for. Years later, the company was bought out and moved to Nebraska and we all went our separate ways, but these ladies that I met are still some of my best friends.

Friday night, we all headed out for ladies night. And oh what a night it was. In our excitement to see eachother, we started partying like it we were in our 20's. We started off mixing up cocktails in our room at The Curtis Hotel. You know you are in for a good night when there is a pre-party to the real party.

The Curtis is a fun and lively Boutique Hotel with funky pop-culture themed floors. It is in the perfect location next to the Denver Center for Performing Arts which was our destination that evening. After drinks, we went out for food before heading to our show.

If you live in Colorado, you must go see Girls Only. It is an amazingly clever and witty two-woman show for all ages. We were in stitches the entire time and my smile muscles still hurt.

It was so good to see the ladies, but time felt so short. I used to spend entire working days with these women, and then go out with them at night, and then hang out with them all week-end, and then on Sunday be sad to say good-bye, even though we would see eachother the next day! They are the type of friends that you never get enough of. Miss you ladies! Though as Connie said, next time we need a coffee date because it took us two days to recover.

Update on Gibson

Thursday, February 19, 2009

Sometimes I forget the power of the internet, until I twit about something spectacular like ass cancer in canines, and then my phone and email ring off the hook. As you know, we here at the Beehive love all things tooshie and poop and we don't discriminate against human or canine. So here is the story and the update.

THE STORY
A few weeks ago, Gibson started licking his butt, excessively. "All dogs lick their butts", you say. But when I mean excessive, I mean obsessive. Like I had filled his crack with treats.

The next morning, when he was outside, I noticed he was gnawing on it. I looked on the back patio and saw little spots of blood. Poor dude. I went into Mommy mode, lifting his tail to check it out. I found a big blocked bloody anal gland. Gross! I can pull poop out of my own daughter's constipated butt, but something about the dog totally grosses me out. So I cleaned him up, fashioned him a cone out of a manilla file and packing tape, and called the vet.

Later that afternoon we all jumped in the car to head to our appointment. Gibson, as if knowing where we were going, had a panic attack and decided to jump in Hadley's lap. Hadley, whose car seat is in the middle seat, rear facing, was trying to take a nap at the time. There I was in five lanes of traffic on the highway, and looking in my rear view mirror, all I could see was his cone. *giggle* If you know dachshunds, you know that extensive and loud yelling have no effect on them. In fact, it makes them more headstrong. When I finally got off the highway to a red stop light, we had a stare down, then a "Don't make me undo my seat belt and come into the back seat" moment, followed by maneuvering him into the front seat. Stroking his ears and whispering calming sweet nothings still did not calm him down.

All of that drama, and as it turns out he had a blocked anal gland that we treated with antibiotics, and twice a day warm compresses. You know I LOVE this dog.

But there's more...
During his follow up, the gland had not completely healed, and when the vet did a biopsy, there were some abnormal cells suggesting cancer. Gibson got lots of extra treats and cuddles last week as we continued to nurse him.

Finally today...
We headed back to the vet for one last check-up. This time, Gibson started off in the front seat with me. Upon pulling into the vet parking lot however, Gibson knew exactly where he was and proceeded to freak out with ear piercing barks. Trying to unload him and Hadley from the car became a comedy of cursing and entanglement in his leash. Suddenly I heard my name called and a very pregnant Dr. Amy asked me if I needed help. I can only hope she didn't hear my exchange with Gibson in which I threatened to kill him if the cancer wasn't going to. It was not a proud moment for me.

Things got much better from there as it appears that Gibson's tooshie is safe for now. He does NOT have Anal Gland Carcinoma, just a little scar tissue. Phew.

A Rose is a Rose

Unless it is a rose masked as Hanky Panky panties.

Yes they are still my favorite underwear. Yes, I threw out all of my other underwear and replaced them with Hanky Panky. Yes their one size fits all lasted through my entire pregnancy. Though DG told me afterwards that their lovely lacy delicateness now looks a bit like old dish towels.

And yes, it was a wonderful Valentine's Day. Complete with pancakes for dinner. I'm sorry it would have been fancier if DG hadn't taken me out and gotten me all liquored up the night before.

Good Inexpensive Wine

Friday, February 13, 2009

With the economy in the crapper, we are all looking for ways to count our pennies and make our dollar stretch just a little bit further. Even though times are rough, we still want to drown our sorrow in spirits, without having to resort to Boone's Farm. This is why I want to tell you about our new favorite wine, Red Diamond Merlot. Not only does it taste amazing, but at $7.99/bottle, it is also reasonably priced. That is why when we see it on sale for $5.99 we go get a case of it.

From their website:
Our juicy Washington Merlot is brought to life by a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and complexity while Cabernet Franc rounds out the fruity characteristics. Perfectly balanced fruit, lush tannins and acidity, Red Diamond Merlot will make your mouth water for more.

There are some great wines coming out of Washington state these days. Washington wines are the new Napa. In doing my research, I also found out that Wine and Spirits rated Red Diamond one of the top 10 Merlots in the country! So what are you waiting for silly? It's Valentine's Day tomorrow. Forget flowers, chocolate, and cards, go out and grab a bottle of Red Diamond for your lover.

Cutting Your Budget

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

When I lost my job 6 months ago, David and I started adjusting our budget so that it would reflect our new income. An episode of Oprah the other day discussed what frugal families do.

Here is what we have done:

1) When we lost the Honda (RIP) to a car accident, we became a one car family. Though this only saves us $20/month in insurance, we have decided not to purchase a 2nd car at this time. I have to say that the brunt of this falls on David as he is the one that has to walk to the light rail every day.

2) We cancelled Netflix. Again, only a savings of $15/month, but it's something right? Instead we watch a lot of movies onDemand, suddenly have free HBO, and rent movies on AppleTV using gift cards we have received. You can also rent movies for free at the Library.

3) All Retirement and College saving is on hold.

4) Our spending has been cut down to only necessities. The only thing we spend money on right now is food, diapers, and clothes for Hadley. This is probably the hardest part for us. I have found that our grocery bill seems to have grown exponentially because of this. It's like I'm taking out my shopping frustration on buying extra broccoli. HA!

With all of the economic doom and gloom taking over the news lately, what have you been doing with your budget?

Hadley Learns Her Letters

Monday, February 09, 2009

One day, while reading one of her numerous ABC books, letters just started clicking with Hadley. 'F' is by far her Favorite letter of all time. Each week, she picks up another one. She currently knows A, F, L, M, O, S, and T.

To celebrate her learning letters, I learned how to make a movie using our iFlip.

Puppy Bowl

Saturday, February 07, 2009

Ooh, what's on tv?

Dogs! Mom, there are dogs!

She was so excited that she needed to get down to get closer to the Puppy Bowl. Though I have to say, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any dachshunds this year. Who do they think they are? Don't they know the wiener is a total draw for people?

25 Random Things About Me

Thursday, February 05, 2009

The Request for 25 Random Things has been flying around Facebook lately and everyone is doing it, like a bad chain letter. Though it has turned out to be quite fun and very insightful. I thought I would post mine here.

1. I love telling the story of my conception. It’s all drama, love, romance, war, and Christmas.

2. I have severe claustrophobia resulting from an operation that I had when I was 4. They were still using ether in the back woods of New Hampshire and I remember screaming and being held down on the table by the nurses as the mask went over my mouth. It’s so bad I will walk up 10 flights of stairs before ever stepping in an elevator.

3. I started taking piano lessons when I was 4, I played french horn in High School and College, and I taught myself how to play guitar in 12th grade.

4. I didn’t blossom until I was 20. Living in France for 6 months, I took care of myself, lost weight, learned to be strong on my own, and gained self esteem.

5. I have always wanted an all girl band called Brazen Hussy. The closest I came was playing in a band in Denver for seven years called Ed Fingers. I wrote songs, played guitar, sang, recorded an album, and shared the stage with three great guys.

6. I really enjoy getting dressed up on Halloween and have been Wonder Woman no less than 6 times, the first being 1974.

7. I met my husband on Match.com. Our 3rd date we saw 311 at Red Rocks, the next week we took a road trip to a wedding in Omaha, NE, and the following month he moved in with his wiener dog.

8. My husband proposed to me with carolers at our annual holiday party. To the tune of “We Wish you a Merry Christmas”, they sang “Will You Marry Me Christy Allbee”. Watching the video still makes me cry.

9. I loved being pregnant so much that I would do it everyday.

10. The single worst moment of my life was a 48 hour stretch in April 2008 when my 4 month old baby girl contracted botulism (1 of 72 kids per year in this country). For two days I watched her wither away to a rag doll in my arms while they were trying to figure out what was wrong and I thought she was going to die. For two weeks we lived in the PICU at Children’s Hospital where she was intubated for a week and had a feeding tube. She is 100% now and the strongest most precious girl I’ve ever met.

11. I enjoy cooking and making new recipes. The Moosewood Cookbook is my favorite of all time, though I’ve never been in the restaurant in Ithaca, NY.

12. I get so excited to take road trips. There are only 6 states in the US I have never been to (MT, ID, LA, ND, AL, MI).

13. I have seen every episode of every season of the Gilmore Girls and Charmed.

14. My favorite color is apple green, as seen in my wedding colors and Hadley’s room.

15. During the summer, when I’ve had a few too many drinks, I have been known to grab a sleeping bag and sleep under the stars in the backyard. Yet I rarely actually go camping.

16. I am uber organized. Everything in my house has a place. I have every tax file, bill, and paycheck stub, back 7 years. Every January, I shred all of my files older than 7 years. You say anal, I say project manager.

17. My favorite summer time drink is a Bees Knees.

18. I am a sweater. Little miss sweaty. Hands dripping, dinner plates under my armpits, unattractive sweater. I’ve rusted guitar strings after being on stage, and in the summer I can only wear black or white, no colors. Seriously, it’s not pretty.

19. In the dead of night, I am a crazy sleep walker/talker/dreamer. In my younger years, my family has caught me before falling down stairs, found me in a closet, and stopped me from running out of a hotel room. David has caught me standing on the bed and scratching in a corner. I hate being woken up too. When my daughter was born, I had a recurring nightmare sometimes 3x’s a night for ten months that she was suffocating in our comforter cover. Even if I wake up and turn the light on, I still believe it is real.

20. There is nothing like going to Vegas with the ladies, drinking bloody mary’s, playing black jack all night long, hanging in the Keno lounge, and betting on horses. I hope those days aren’t over.

21. My biggest regret in life is missing my brother's wedding last year in South Korea. My 2nd biggest regret is never having gone to visit him in the 8 years he has lived there. I am the worst sister EVER.

22. I do not regret waiting so long to settle down, because my 20’s and early 30’s are full of amazing times with my bitches.

23. I tend to hibernate in the winter. No really, I stop going out, go to bed early, and put on weight for warmth.

24. I am completely gullible. Wool over my eyes gullible. I believe too much in the goodness of people.

25. I don’t want to pass on any of my own food issues or phobias to my daughter. But I’m not sure how not to.

Mommy Blogging Contest

Wednesday, February 04, 2009

It appears that I've gone off the mommy blogging deep end the past few weeks posting nothing but pictures of Hadley. That's why I mixed it up this week-end with a fun recipe. However, you would be surprised by how many people write to tell me that they only come to this here online diary of mine to see pictures of Hadley. "What about ME", I ask? According to my Dad, it's no longer about me. That being said, I have so many fun videos this month, that the question is which one do I post? Playing with butterflies on her Dad's iphone, naked getting ready for a bath, or trying to say the word Octopus? So we're back to the business of cuteness this week, with me sprinkled in intermittently.

So what's this business about a contest? Well I'm glad you asked. I've mentioned before how many magazine subscriptions we have. DG has paired down a few over the years, only to start getting a several more once we had a baby. We currently get Parenting and Scholastic's Parent & Child. This week, Scholastic is having a contest to nominate Mommy Bloggers. So I was thinking, that if there are any that you really enjoy, ahem, that maybe you visit one day a week or so, and maybe there is always a Bee in the header, and you totally wouldn't mind nominating for a favorite, say like little old me, then you can click here to nominate them. And if you are so kind to do so, let me know so I can honor and love and treasure you with my sincerest gratitude forever and ever.

Asian Spring Rolls with a Hoisin Dipping Sauce

Sunday, February 01, 2009

With the Asian New Year upon us, I conveniently got an email from Cook's Illustrated for an Asian inspired Dim Sum menu. You can see the full menu here. When it comes to asian food, I'm about as daring as stir fry and tofu fried rice. So the thought of making Spring Rolls sounded so new and exciting. It was a total turn on.

H. and I headed out to the Asian market in town to get all of our ingredients. This one huge strip mall is like stepping out of the U.S. and into a foreign country. It is totally fun and if you live in Denver, you really need to go there. It's on the corner of Alameda and Federal. Also, the whole appetizer cost me $6.97, not including all the sauces and oils which I already had. Crazy!

Spring Roll Ingredients
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons lime juice
1 teaspoon table salt
3 ounces rice vermicelli
1 large carrot , peeled and grated on large holes of box grater (about 1/2 cup)
1/3 cup chopped unsalted roasted peanuts
1 medium jalapeño chile or 2 Thai chiles, stemmed, seeded, and minced, or 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 large cucumber (about 12 ounces), peeled and cut into thin 2" slices
4 leaves red leaf lettuce or Boston lettuce, halved lengthwise
8 round rice paper wrappers (8 inches in diameter)
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh Thai basil leaves or mint leaves
1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves

Instructions (Straight from Cook's Illustrated)
1. Combine sugar, fish sauce, and lime juice in small bowl; set aside.

2. Bring 2 quarts water to boil in medium saucepan. Stir in salt and rice vermicelli. Cook until noodles are tender but not mushy, 3 to 4 minutes. Drain noodles and rinse under cold running water until cool. Drain again and transfer to medium bowl; toss 2 tablespoons fish sauce mixture with noodles and set aside.

3. Combine carrot, peanuts, and jalapeño in small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon fish sauce mixture; toss to combine. Toss cucumber in remaining 1 tablespoon fish sauce mixture.

4. Here is what my assembly line looked like. Fill 9-inch pie plate with 1 inch warm water. Working one at a time, immerse each wrapper in water until just pliable, about 20 seconds; lay softened wrapper on clean, damp, towel. Scatter 6 Thai basil leaves and 6 cilantro leaves over wrapper. Arrange 4 cucumber sticks horizontally on wrapper; top with 1 tablespoon carrot mixture, then arrange about 2 1/2 tablespoons noodles on top of carrot mixture. Wrap spring roll like a burrito; set on 1 lettuce piece on platter.

The recipe says it makes about 8, but I squeezed in about 12. We needed to taste test a few of course before we brought it to the party.

Sauces are so easy to throw together, and if you can believe it, I had all the ingredients already on hand. Score.

Hoisin Sesame Sauce Ingredients
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 inch piece fresh ginger, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
2 medium cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Instructions
Mix hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce, and 2 tablespoons water in small bowl; set aside. Heat vegetable oil in small saucepan over medium heat; sauté ginger and garlic until fragrant but not browned, about 30 seconds. Stir in hoisin mixture; cook until flavors meld, about 2 to 3 minutes. Off heat, stir in cilantro. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Since we were taking them to a party, my spring rolls are laying in their little lettuce pillows in tupperware.

These are so fresh and tasty and so easy. I can't believe it's taken me 37 years to make them! The sauce really enhanced the flavors. Next time, I would like to try and whip up a peanut sauce for them too.
