How Do You Pack?
Tuesday, April 24, 2007
I move on an average of every 4 years, each time fairly seamlessly. I have to say however, I've pretty much lost my gusto to pack. It would be fair to say, that as I've gotten older, my "stuff" or my taste has gotten better, but does that mean that I should run out and buy double walled boxes with excessive amounts of peanuts and bubble wrap? I am happy lining my hand me down boxes with crumpled up newspaper wrapping everything nicely in paper, and writing FRAGILE on the side of the box. But if I were to lose say an old vase or dish set, I would be distraught for a couple of days.
As it turns out, two of my good friends are moving too. How are you packing Amy and Joy?

I moved 12 times in 10 years - the only time NOTHING broke is when the movers packed everything. I've learned to use LOTS and LOTS of newspaper - and don't pack a box too heavy - if you can't lift it, take something out. Good Luck with your move.
hey christy. good luck with everything and congrats on the new house! i'm getting ready to move back to Buffalo--house on the market, stealing neighbors neglected newspapers for cushion--yeah, i feel your pain. it's been 3 years since i moved, and while i'm very exited, i wish i could twitch my nose/snap my fingers/click my heels 3 times and have it all be done with.......*sigh*. good luck!

Cara, thanks for the advice! Holy cow 12 times! Hope you never lost anything too memorable.
Judy - Congrats on your move back. I've been keeping tabs on you asking Molly about you every time I see her! It will be nice to be close to your family again. Good luck with your move and selling your place.
I'm not sure I'm quite on pace with cara, but pretty close. This is the third move in the last 21 months.
Hints-Use cloth napkins, placemats and extra towels as packing materials.
Mix up your books a bit so that each box has paperbacks and hardcovers, otherwise they'll be too heavy.
Are you moving yourself? U-haul had a deal where we got a rebate on packing materials if we rented a truck. In essence, it was all free, so we got the dish boxes and lots of bubble wrap. Check into that.
Get your bed set up first, then music, then T.V. So that when you get to the exhausted point while unpacking, you'll have a way to relax.
Toss things out!! Or use Freecycle.
The only stuff that broke when I moved to LA was the box that UPS packed for me. Eventually I was reimbursed for the losses.
One thing I learned is that clothes are heavy. I packed this BIG box with clothes thinking that the clothes are light, and then I couldn't lift it. Small boxes.
Lots of tightly crumpled newspaper works well. And don't put lots of heavy breakable stuff together, like a box of your favorite teapots, ceramic bowls, etc.
And have fun!
another hint, pack clothes in heavy duty garbage bags ... they mold around things so you can "stuff" them in places you didn't think they could go!
