The Geneology of the Allbee/Albee name
Wednesday, September 20, 2006
Wouldn't you know, when we were in line to take the ferry to Monhegan, there was a family in front of us with the last name Albee from the Bangor, ME area. Crazy. The woman was trying to give them my tickets and everyone was remarking about how bizarre it was that our names were so similar.
As the story goes, there were two ALLBEE brothers who had a bit of a falling out. They split up and in anger, one of them removed an 'L' from his last name. Thats about all I know. One letter away, though I am sure we are related somehow. I don't think there was a family resemblance.
Then we headed up to the cemetary in Monhegan and wouldn't you know there were roughly 5 headstones with the last name ALBEE. I think my family history (which I began typing awhile ago) only goes back 4-5 generations or so. All I really want to know is where I got these teeth from?
How far can you go back?

ALbee is no relation to ALLBEE. All people with the last name of Jones are not related and all people with the last name of Allbee are not related. It may seem that way because there are so few Allbee's.
You got your teeth from your Father's side (sorry) and your orthodontist.
If you look at pictures of your great Grandfather you will see the Allbee mouth goes back at least that far. I think it start when Allbee/Noyes combined in the late 1890's. We will blame it on the Noyes side.
Besides the teeth are great this time of year for biting into fresh apples.
For one with a crazy last name like mine, it was even worse back a few generations ago. I guess Germans are into double letters, so throw in a few more 'm', 'z' and 'l' and well, you get the idea. My great-grandparents decided to "Americanized" the name by dropping the extra letters but I'm still left with one heck of a name. Imagine trying to learn how to pronounce and say your own last name. I was in the 3rd grade before I got it right!
I say run with the two brothers in a fight story regarding your maiden name. It will make for a great story for your kids (hint, hint) ;)
I've always been more interested in the Irish side of the family, and that history is hard to trace. But a few weeks ago I was looking up DuBois on Wikipedia and I think I'm descended from someone who came to the US in 1660. He settled near Kingston, NY, and that's where my father's family is from.
I need to check into this more sometime, because according to http://www.dbfa.org/ it would also mean that I'm related to Marlon Brando and W.E.B. DuBois. And that my great, great etc. grandmother was once captured by Indians. That would be a cool story to tell the kids.
We are ALL related somehow, like 10+ generations ago. You are related to Jesus too, though I'm not going to try and prove it.
