Maine, Here We Come!
Saturday, July 08, 2006

A little known fact about me: I lived in Bangor, Maine between 1979 and 1983 during the time in which my mom went to the Bangor Theological Seminar. I went back for one visit in around 1985 and beyond travelling to the outlets in Kittery, Maine, have not been back since. So I am very excited that my BFITWWW, Joy is getting married on Monhegan Island this summer.
I just made our reservation for the above pictured Bed and Breakfast called the Gosnold Arms located on the water just North of Portland. As it happens, the ferry to take us to Monhegan is located across the street!!! How lucky for us to find this. Oh, the power of the internet. After being on island for 2 days staying at the Island Inn we will drive back to Portland along the coast and stay in another Bed and Breakfast in downtown Portland called The Wild Iris. All the rooms had flower names and we chose the Iris room pictured below.

I just can't wait. Vacations are awesome.

You know you have to go to the LL Bean store in Freeport. And don't get too excited about being on an Island. We always had clam bakes the first week back at school, and the water was freezing.
Are you going to be in CT the rest of the week before the reception?
I am so excited too! And I am so happy that you can take time away from your own wedding euphoria to anticipate mine! And it means so much that my BFITWWW will be there too!
I make a point of stopping at the LLBean store in Freeport every time I go up. I had a pair of old ratty shoes that I bought thereyears ago, and I exchanged them with no problem for a pair of new ones!
Oh, don't get excited about being on an island????? I have been on this island every year since 1998, and one year for three months straight. And I love it so much more every time! I know islands are not for everyone, but this one is very special.
Sorry, I guess I'm a mountain and forest gal now. We spent a year living on an island and only went to the beach once, and I got stung by a jellyfish. The water there was as warm as bath water and I could never get used to it.
I suppose I do need to get back to Maine sometime. I love to clamber on the rocks while the waves crash, but no way would I go swimming in Sept.
I am v. excited to be on this beautiful island and am not expecting a tropical paradise. This will be the closest I've been to fall in New England in probably 20 years. The more JCrew sweaters DG can wear in one week, the happier he will be :)
I also can't wait to drive up the coast and go through Boothbay b/c we vacationed there every year as kids!
Island living is certainly not for everyone. I lived on Nantucket Island for two years. Went through two harsh winters, Hurricane Edouard, 7 days of thick fog, countless days of straight rain, and mildew. You do have to get used to the fact that you cannot just drive to a big mall, or keep on going down that road, BUT with those "inconveniences" ( i loved them all) came many, many unforgetable memories and experiences all of which I still cherish. Islands are all different and unique. I cannot wait to spend time on Monhegan and experience the culture there, no matter how small or big they are.
what makes you an ex rock star?
