Is America Ready?

Tuesday, June 06, 2006

In 1984, my interest in politics began when my then liberal father drove me to Hartford to see Geraldine Ferraro vice presidential nominee to Walter Mondale speak at the Capital. I was 13 when on election night, I went to my room and shut the door to cry over their loss to that stupid actor turned Republican Ronald Reagan. But what did I know? I was only following my parents lead.

My Junior year in high school I wrote an essay that won me a 6 hour train ride to Washington D.C. to attend a week called Presidential Classroom. Students from all over the country attended daily meetings and lectures about the state of governmental affairs. I remember several things about this trip. First, for several hundred seemingly smart high school kids, few of them could pick out Connecticut (my home state) on a map. One girl from Texas didn't even know it was a state. Second, I got to meet with then State Representative, swarmy John Rowland, who went on to become Govenor of CT, who resigned and served two years in jail for something called corruption. Third, I watched heads of the Sandanista and Contra Government in Nicaragua give lectures about what their people were going through. All in all it was very educational week.

Beyond catching five minutes of news on NPR when driving, and perusing the political cartoons in Newsweek, I do not keep up with politics, and I don’t have the time or energy to be knowledgeable about all of the issues. I just want to vote for someone who does care about them. I am the worst kind of voter, I am complacent.

I also make it a point not to discuss politics or religion with anyone, as it always ends in bitter anger, no one thinks different, no one changes their mind, it’s just a bunch of arguing. That and I wouldn't hold up in a debate about politics. There'd be a lot of "oh yeah, well, he sucks" with nothing meaningful to back it up.

That being said, someone recently commented here on what I thought about Hillary Clintonrunning for president. If the democrats chose Hillary as their candidate, I would back her. I do not believe enough people in this country would vote for her, but I would back her if that is who they chose. As a matter of fact, I will back whomever they put in there to run against Cheney. But then I heard Al Gore on NPR the other day *sniff* and he was so eloquent and so caring about some amazing topics that we never even think about. And then I think, would Al Gore do better now than he did last time? I would back Al Gore too.

It's so nice to know that I am not alone in my current political outlook. Thanks! If most politicians were interesting past their lack of ethics and human-ness, I might feel differently.

But as least you vote, so you're not totally complacent.

I keep an eye on Hillary, she's also my senator now, so she makes the news fairly often. She's been good for New York, and even supports some conservative issues that are important for my upstate neighbors. Is that good or bad? Is she pandering to get votes, or is she moderating her views to better serve her constituency?

I'd like to see Al back in government, he's been getting a lot of press lately from his global warming movie. But not as president. Head of the EPA maybe, or Ambassador. Too bad he has no chance of getting re-elected Senator from Red State Tennesee.

P.S. I get most of my political news from The Daily Show

PAY ATTENTION and VOTE or we will get another one dimensional President trying to do a three dimensional job.

Liberal? I aint no freakin liberal. Well maybe a little freakin but no liberal. The only person I would vote for right now is John McCain. (republican)

I took you to see Geraldine Ferraro because she was a positive female roll model. There were not to many back in the 80's.

Shame on you. PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!!

Darn, I'm all worked up now

As I see it now on the Demo side I do think Hillary will run for the nomination. I would like to see Al Gore run again. Maybe the Supreme Court would give the presidency to him next time. I also like Senator Joe Biden of Delaware. I would note vote for any republican.

Dad, I had the word "then" liberal in the original draft, but it was removed...I've added it back in. And maybe also didn't want to admit to the world that you are so conservative in your old age! What happened to the flower power liberal guy I grew up with?

I'm thinking it'll be McCain in 08 -- mainly because he's making such a blatant effort to embrace the religious right lately.

Probably Hillary for the dems, although I like Biden a lot too.

I'm fine with it being Hilary but I'd be okay with new blood too. Basically, as long as it isn't another ultra- religious, hypocritical, ignorant, conservative Republican or one of their evil minions, I'll be all good.

I get my news from a combination of NPR, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report! Yay!

CONSERVATIVE? I ain't no freakin conservative. If Bill Clinton put his hand down his pants and left it there I would still give him my vote for President again. I say it's better to have a President with his hand down his pants than a President with his head up his ASS!

I think I remember that trip to Hartford to see Ferraro speak. It's one of those things you think you remember or maybe it was a dream.
