37 minutes too long in Walmart
Thursday, April 27, 2006
I am dragged to Walmart 1-2 times per year. Each time, I leave feeling like I need a shower and have wasted precious time that I will never get back. Beyond their treatment of employees, the cheap goods, putting companies out of business and their crappy grocery store, I generally just don't like giving them my money.
Such was the case on Sunday morning when DG thought we should swing in to see what Garden stuff they had. We had just bought a car full of plants and shrubs next door at Home Depot. I said ok, but begging/whining that I not be forced to stay for more than 10 minutes. So DG set his watch to start timing us as we walked in the door. We were in the store for about 14 minutes and in line for about 23, I'm not kidding you. It is the SAME everytime I go. 50 people trying to check out, 5 of 30 lines open?!?! It never changes. On the upside, we did get cheap bronzed tiki torches that we later saw at Smith and Hawken for $30/each.
I've met people who love Walmart, love the prices, and don't care what awful things they are doing to our country and the pressure they are putting on international factories. One woman told me it was the only place she could afford to shop and feed her whole family. This is the same woman that went ahead and bought herself a brand new $20K American car. They are feeding their kids canned beans and government grade meat from Walmart, but they can afford a brand new car that barely has room for a car seat. I'm not even going to step onto the soap box because that example screams a lesson in itself. Tiki torches and all, I still think Walmart blows.

Everytime they try to build a new Walmart in Portland there is a MAJOR blow up of people trying to stop it. So far, there's only one that I know of, far away from downtown and any close-in neighborhoods. I'm happy to say I've never been in it once.
I think the last Walmart I was in was once in Flagstaff, then a couple of times in Muncie...
My mom, on the other hand, loves going to the Walmart near her and looking for bargains.
And some people feel that they need to shop there to make ends meet.
I just consider myself lucky that I am able (financially) to make the choice to not shop there and to get food and other items elsewhere.
yes, go through a detox, purge yourself, and donate to the DNC to make up for the tekki torches
I know what you mean about the shower.... I just wish I could shower my conscience clean after buying my big bargain, a pilates, yoga, aerobics two in one exercise video for $5!! I will probably never use it out of guilt.
The problem now is that Wal-mart has succeeded in putting all the smaller department stores out of business. We have dollar stores here, and the sort of discount stores that sell odd lots, but Ames went bankrupt a few years ago. So people are thrilled that Wal-mart is coming. And I have to admit, that if I can make just one stop and get food, clothes & toys, I'm happy. Especially in the winter.
I'd rather go to K-mart, but it's an hour away. And Target is not even on the map here.
Oooh fun, I've started a discussion. I definitely understand the lure of low prices at Walmart. Unfortunately, what you don't often read about is the global impact. I think it's important that even if you shop there, that you are aware of what they do. They pay their employees so little that it actually affects your local community and we end up paying more of our tax dollars to support their poor employees. Also, if Wal-Mart were an individual economy, it would rank as China’s eight-biggest trading partner, ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada. (www.wakeupwalmart.com/facts/#china) And that bargain comes to you at a price - Workers in China’s Guangdong Province who made toys for Wal-Mart toiled as much as 130 hours per week for wages averaging 16.5¢ per hour (below the minimum wage) and no health insurance. [National Labor Committee, “Toys of Misery 2004,” February 2004]
Interesting stuff.
There is also a movie out, "Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price."
